car tracking
The role of car tracking centers
With the advent of GPS navigation, it has now become possible to create
systems that are capable of performing car tracking down to an accuracy
that makes them easy to locate in the even that they are stolen. Schemes
for using car tracking for this purpose have been successfully piloted
in many countries. They use a system whereby the vehicle to be tracked
is augmented with a GPS receiver using radio waves to transmit the
location information to a central point where the processing takes place
to position the vehicle on a map.
In this way, the vehicle can be found by the police when it is reported
stolen. This is not the only use for car tracking, and centers are set
up to coordinate signals from, for example, emergency vehicles so that
the services know where they are and can contact them to ensure that the
closest vehicle can service the request. Also in cases where multiple
police vehicles might be chains a suspect, the cars can be tracked
allowing better coordination of chases.
Other uses for car tracking that are currently in progress allow
managers of fleets of vehicles to manage them more effectively,
especially in cases where they are providing a service – such as taxis.
The scheduling center will not have to rely on the radioed position of
the taxi in order to ensure that the most appropriate one is chosen to
serve clients that are requesting them.
From a consumer point of view car tracking might seem to be a way of
checking up on them, but the advantages should outweigh any concerns
that the general public might have over any slight loss of civil
liberty.
