The value of using mapping software
If you are already familiar with the world of GPS navigation, then you
have probably wondered how you can get even more out of this incredible
enabling technology, and the answer lies in using mapping software to
build your own maps and add points of interest that you can upload to
your GPS unit. If you are lucky enough to won one of the many portable,
handheld units, or one which is used in conjunction with a PDA or
laptop, then mapping software will give you an added dimension to your
GPS use.
For example with mapping software, you will be able to upload maps that
you have scanned in from paper versions, and even augment them with
additional information relating to all manner of excursions. You can
even plan your route before leaving the house, and have the GPS unit
keep you on the right track.
Other uses for advanced mapping software include the ability to input
detailed terrain information. This is very useful if you want to be able
to take a map with you which has height and other topographical
information built in, so that you do not have to resort to reading a
paper version.
GPS Is great, but is relies on the information that is given to it by
the mapping software, and this includes everything from the lie of the
land to roads and houses. In fact, some maps that are sold might not
have enough detail on them for your use and so it can be a good
investment to buy tools which enable you to do add it yourself – such as
the position of tees and pins on a golf course.
