navigation
Navigation is an important skill to have if
you're hiking or backpacking
Finding your way in the backcountry can be either harrowing or
satisfying. Paper maps aren't always accurate and landmarks aren't
always handy. Two major tools for navigation are the low-tech
traditional analog compass and the high-tech digital global positioning
system or GPS. Although navigation with a GPS is more precise, you
should learn to use a simple, basic, non-electronic compass. Your life
may depend on it some day, especially if you venture off the trail.
The compass is a tried-and-true navigation device. A floating needle in
a fluid-filled housing always points to the Earth's magnetic north pole.
Typically, you point an arrow on the compass in the direction you want
to travel and rotate the bezel on the housing to find your bearing in
degrees or cardinal points. It's that simple! A compass can be used in
conjunction with a map or alone. Using a compass with a map is a bit
more complex because you have to account for the difference between
magnetic north on the compass and true north on the map. There are
plenty of books and articles about using a compass. With a good book, a
basic compass and a little bit of practice, you'll soon be a wilderness
pathfinder!
The GPS takes all the guesswork out of navigation. This precision
electronic receiver allows you to take bearings from a network of
satellites in Earth orbit. With a global positioning system you can
pinpoint your location virtually anywhere on the planet. You can also
store specific location information in the device for later retrieval.
Battery-operated or rechargeable, the receiver is small and compact. If
accuracy is important and you don't mind spending some extra money,
choose a GPS. But remember to carry extra batteries!
Regardless of which navigation method you choose, be sure you're very
familiar with using it before you venture out into the wild. In no time
you'll be off the beaten path and on a bearing to adventure!
