The history of GPS – one of a kind!

GPS or the Global Positioning System is the indeed only system of its kind in the world. The history of GPS, this amazing system, is as fascinating as its achievements. Since prehistoric times, people have been trying to find a reliable method to tell where they are, to help guide them to where they are going, and to get them back home again. Cavemen probably used stones and twigs to mark a trail when they set out hunting for food. The earliest mariners followed the coast or charted their course by following the stars. But when they realized that the stars could not help them in the day, the history of GPS began.

Global Positioning System was invented by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and Ivan Getting. Scientists decided that the only way to provide coverage for the entire world was to place high-frequency radio transmitters in space. GPS uses these man-made stars or satellites as reference points to calculate geographical positions, accurate to a matter of meters. We can find from the history of GPS that eighteen satellites, six in each of three orbital planes spaced 120º apart with their ground stations, formed the original GPS.

There were many reasons for this invention, though primarily it was military use. History of GPS notes that it has helped many a soldiers from wandering off into enemy lands. It is now gaining prominence as a timing tool. In fact, with advanced forms of GPS, you can make measurements to better than a centimeter.
