GPS map software – see even the trees in your own
back yard
The US Department of Defense global positioning system (a set of 24
satellites watching over us) has mapped virtually every point on earth –
providing aerial information so detailed that GPS map software even lets
you see the trees in your own backyard = down to 1 square foot of
detail. Most commercial GPS map software won’t use this level of detail,
but aerial photographs are just one of the popular applications – and
ever more novel ways to use all the information collected are being
developed.
GPS map software is available for a range of consumer markets. One of
the major uses for this intricate detail is to provide “up to date” city
street maps or route finders – some of which even allow you to print out
directions as well as map information in the detail you desire. Outdoor
enthusiasts enjoy the colourful topographic maps which depict the
landscape of even the remotest wilderness in a “3d” format (similar to
the trusty ordinance survey map). Even on water, you aren’t left behind
- nautical maps based on GPS information are available too.
One of the great things about GPS map software, is that they can be
downloaded for PCs, Macs, many of the “palm” computers as well as for
gps receivers. In theory, they are the most up to date maps available.
In practice, you’ll find that most are produced at regular intervals, so
there may be slight differences between the electronic version and “real
life”. You’re bound to find the one to suit your purpose – whether you
simply want to view it on your PC and print out a hard copy or you want
to download it to your mobile receiver to take with you wherever you
plan to travel or hike.
