GPS watches: Compact, feature-packed and
highly functional
GPS technology, once available only to the military, can now be strapped
on your wrist. GPS stands for global positioning system -- a way to find
your position at any time anywhere on the planet. A network of 24
satellites circles the Earth in specially staggered orbits. These
satellites continuously transmit location data -- latitude, longitude
and altitude. They also transmit super-accurate time that is used by GPS
watches. GPS watches are actually receivers that can capture this data
and translate it to an electronic display on the unit's built-in screen.
For sports enthusiasts or athletes, GPS watches can track speed,
distance and much more. Use by athletes is a relatively new use for GPS
which is normally used for navigation. Since the GPS satellites have
super-accurate atomic clocks, speed and distance can be calculated with
amazing precision.
Among GPS watches, one model has dual time zones, automatic time setting
when GPS is active, countdown timer and several alarm modes. The unit
will also display current speed/pace, average speed/pace, best pace,
target speed alarm. Speed is displayed in 1/10 mph or kph. Available
distance functions include continuous odometer, target distance alarm,
distance of activity. Distance is displayed in 1/1000 mile or kilometer.
The instrument has a 100-lap memory with lap number, time, distance and
average lap speed/pace. Water resistance and a night-light are also
built in. It's like having a sports computer on your wrist!
GPS watches with their compact designs and high functionality are
perfect additions to your training or workout routine. To learn more
