GPS maps: Revolutionizing hiking and
backpacking
Imagine being able to navigate to within 10 feet of your destination.
GPS maps, when loaded into a GPS receiver can enable you to do exactly
that. There are special GPS maps for the hiker and backpacker that
include topographical (elevation) information -- so you'll know exactly
how high that hill you have to traverse is! Some GPS units from
manufacturers like Garmin have altimeters and electronic compasses built
in, but it is GPS maps that are the keys to an enjoyable and successful
trek.
Garmin, for example, has GPS maps of the national parks in the eastern
and western United States. These extremely detailed topographical maps
cover national forests, national parks and some state parks. The maps
list points of interest within the parks, visitor centers, campsites,
ranger stations, restaurants and lodges. Roads and hiking trails may be
included, as are summit elevations and peaks.
Also available from Garmin are topographic GPS maps of the United States
and Canada.
These maps show shoreline detail for bodies of water including
reservoirs. Hiking trails, and backwoods trails are also featured.
You'll also see campgrounds and public facilities.
If you venture off the trail, you can find roads and highways, churches
and schools. If you venture onto a waterway, you can find, dams, boat
ramps, harbor lights and buoys.
For the international traveler, there are world maps and a unique
product from Garmin that details over 2,200 miles of hiking trails in
the United Kingdom and Ireland. The 2,200 miles are divided into 200
scenic walking treks where you'll see quaint villages, elegant estates
and stately castles. Each route can be downloaded to your GPS for easy
navigation. GPS maps have truly come of age in this product.
