GPS systems – commercial, recreational, and
emergency service navigation
GPS systems are fast becoming the navigational system of choice for
commercial travelers, emergency services and outdoor enthusiasts. From
in-vehicle models to hand held receivers, you can find one of the GPS
systems to suit your requirements. So from now on, you can forget buying
multiple municipal city maps for every city you propose to visit – you
can download the information and plot your course so you’ll know exactly
when to turn (and which way to go).
GPS systems use the 24 US Department of Defense satellites orbiting our
skies. At any time, there are about 5 or 6 within range of every point
on earth, enabling virtually every point on earth to be mapped, as well
as being able to locate any receiver – wherever you happen to be. A few
gps receiver manufacturers have developed navigational features which
set them “streets” above the rest of the market, so do your homework and
find the gps that best fits your needs - Magellan, Garmin and Trimble
are three of the best to check out.
Many GPS systems are capable of downloading information in great detail
for specific areas you intend to visit. You can plot your course and
highlight any notable points along the way, calculate your overall
distance and even gauge how long it will take to get where you intend to
go. Some will even connect to your PC, so you can print out a hard copy
(handy for being able to give your travel plans to the person who you
check in with at the end of the day). Once you’ve used one, you’ll
wonder why you didn’t try it before.
