GPS navigation systems
Not all GPS navigation systems were created
equal
All GPS navigation systems are not created equal, and there are many
kinds on the market, each with its own set of advantages and
disadvantages. Their primary function remains relatively the same,
however, and that is to try and inform the user about where they are,
with relation to where they need to be. Some GPS navigation systems are
better at this than others, and it just depends on how much work you
want to do in order to be able to navigate in the real world in a
fashion that is comfortable and reliable.
For example, those who tend to be good at reading maps and charts, such
as those who frequently perform maritime navigation will use GPS
navigation systems which are geared towards not needing to constantly be
looking at a map. For them, it is enough to know what bearing to head
off on, and keep an eye on the radar and sonar to avoid running into
things.
On the other hand, GPS navigation systems which are designed to be used
in other vehicles, for people whose need for such a system extends to
the fact that they do not want to, or even know how to read a map well
enough to plan the route from A to B in the same way that other people
can. They use systems which are much more ‘intelligent’ and can display
a full color plan of where they need to go, as well as give voice
commands.
Somewhere in the middle, there are GPS navigation systems which are
portable enough to take on a hike, and yet which offer some of the same
advanced features of the larger systems, but in a much more easy to
carry system.
