It is inevitable that whenever a new technology comes along tat is
useful and desirable that after a while a discount version becomes
available. GPS discount equipment comes in two forms – cheap copies of
units which have certain features which makes them more sellable, and
end of line brands. When shopping in GPS discount stores it is very
important to know whether what you are buying falls into the cheap copy
category, and if so, what the consequences are.
Firstly, the accuracy of GPS discount brands will likely be different
from those in the higher price bracket. This is usually due to the
amount of GPS satellite data that the processor inside is capable of
handling. Most of the high end receivers are capable of handling up to
12 signals at the same time, which allows them to operate at a high
level of accuracy.
Cheap GPS discount brands tend to work with less satellites which means
that when the signal is dropped from one of them, the accuracy with
which the unit can pinpoint itself will drop. But, tracking more signals
means more processing power, and hence a more expensive device.
Also, the cheaper GPS discount brands will not be equipped with the same
kind of mapping capabilities that the high end brands are. Typically,
maps are, over time, quite an expensive ownership cost of a GPS system.
All of these facts make it more preferable to spend that little bit
extra on a cheap premium brand, rather than buying a cheap GPS discount
brand, except when mapping and accuracy are not the top priorities.
