Solving navigation problems with Garmin GPS
software
Owners of Garmin products may not be aware of this, but the range of
navigational equipment can be complemented with a variety of Garmin GPS
software, from connectivity solutions right through to firmware updates
and useful utilities. It is necessary to point out, though, that some of
the available Garmin GPS software is only useful if you have a
navigation system that can be connected to your PC, either through a
serial link up or via a USB cable.
If your unit does not have this possibility, then there is some Garmin
GPS software that will not be applicable – such as those downloads aimed
at extending the units functionality, or providing updates to the core
software which powers the device. However, there will be some items
which are of interest.
For those who own one of the many units which do support communication
with your PC, there are many products which can make your life easier.
Part of the Garmin GPS software range is aimed at those who do not have
mapping capabilities in the GPS unit itself, such as waypoint managers
and so forth. The force behind these is that you can build your waypoint
list from a real map, and then place the list in the GPS to enable you
to navigate between them as if you had a built-in map.
Other Garmin GPS software products enable the user to convert an
existing paper map or electronic map to the MapSource format for
downloading onto the GPS unit, thus extending its’ usefulness.
