Garmen GPS
Finding your way with Garmen GPS portable
navigation units
Garmen GPS navigation units come in many different shapes, sizes and
offer a variety of features for hunting, fishing, trekking or driving.
Choosing one might seem to be a daunting task at first, because the
choice of Garmen GPS units extends through ranges designed to meet all
navigational needs. They all work in the same basic fashion – using
satellites to triangulate an accurate position so that you can find
yourself on a map, or use the built in display to see exactly where you
are.
All the handheld units in the Garmen GPS range are extremely rugged and
lightweight, often boasting features which lesser devices leave out such
as the TracBack mode, which allows the unit to reverse the logged path,
thus giving the user an easy return to their starting point. Most are
also waterproof, and come in a variety of styles and colors.
One other innovation sported by some of the map-based systems in the
Garmen GPS range is the a Geocache Navigation mode, enabling the user to
enter a series of points that are designated as ‘geocaches’ and navigate
between them. Where available, the dedicated geocache mode shows
waypoint display, including distance and expected arrival time.
Many of the more advanced Garmen GPS units also feature Wide Area
Augmentation System compatibility, and can pinpoint the user on the base
map to within 3 meters, as well as PC connectivity to allow the transfer
of information to and from the unit. This includes compatibility with
the Garmen MapSource CD-ROM range.
