GPS map and mapping software
The
GPS system does not work by magic, even if it might appear to at times.
In fact, each one has a special GPS map which allows it to collate the
global position of the unit, in real time, against a map of the area in
which it finds itself. As you may expect, there are a number of sources
to choose from
if you need a GPS map, however not all of them are free, and not all of them
reliable.
The first source is a topographical map you may already have. With the
appropriate software, you
can create a GPS map from an existing topographical map. This will
involve the map being scanned into your computer, and using an a
suitable software package to convert the picture into a series of
co-ordinates, heights and other information needed to build a digital
map.
If you do not have a scanner, or a suitable map, then you will need to
purchase a GPS map for use with your particular brand of GPS receiver.
Prices will vary according to the type of base map used, and the quality
and amount of
information that the supplier has put on the digital map.
For example, a GPS map designed to be used in highway and urban
navigation systems, which includes cities, roads, and other more
detailed features will be comparatively expensive compared to those which have only the key
geographic features – heights, rivers and lakes.
This may be enough for the backpacker or climber, after all they will not
need a GPS map with every possible detail, and so they can opt for the freely
available, or cheaper variety. Free options are not usually available to
owners of vehicle based GPS systems, such as aviation, maritime or
highway vehicles and they will need to buy the map from their GPS
manufacturer.
