Pocket PC GPS
Creating a Pocket PC GPS solution is easy
For users of the Pocket PC, there is a new addition to your system that
can help with all your navigation needs, whether you are on foot, in
your car, or even out at sea. Creating a Pocket PC GPS solution is easy
– all that you need is a GPS antenna, and some clever software to
interpret the satellite signals that it receives. In fact, many
manufactures create Pocket PC GPS solutions for you that will work right
out of the box.
If you already have a Pocket PC, then you need to look for a compatible
extension to create the Pocket PC GPS which will suit you. These are
usually available in two flavors. The first is a kind of cradle into
which you stow your Pocket PC, and the cradle contains the GPS antenna
and some electronics to draw power from your PDA.
The other kind of Pocket PC GPS system uses a separately powered GPS
antenna, which communicates with the PC using Bluetooth. This means that
the system does not draw PDA power, and also that the receiver can be
placed on the outside of the vehicle, where it will get the best signal
reception. Not all Pocket PCs support Bluetooth, however, so you will
need to check before you buy.
There is a price advantage in setting up a Pocket PC GPS which may not
be immediately apparent. It is true that the combination of the GPS
software, antenna and Pocket PC itself represents a cost which is larger
than a handheld GPS unit on its own. However, the cost of adding a GPS
to a Pocket PC is far less, and in buying a Pocket PC the user is
getting more than just a GPS device – it is a PDA and computer in its’
own right.
