Advances in marine navigation made possible
through sophisticated technology
The days of using flapping charts, compasses and trying to figure out
your position by following the stars is over. The new approach to marine
navigation uses sophisticated techniques such as radar, sonar, and now
GPS navigation. In fact, some of the best advances in marine navigation
have come about thanks to the system of navigation satellites installed
round the Earth.
When buying a GPS system to be used for marine navigation there are a
few things that can be more useful in a system which is destined for the
ocean rather than just a land based device. For example, they need to be
able to support various different kinds of co-ordinate systems, because,
like it or not, at some point you may have to resort to paper charts if
you find yourself out of range of the map that is loaded in the GPS
system.
There are addition features which have nothing to do with marine
navigation in particular, but which can make the life of the navigator
easier. These include units with built-in sonar or ones that can
interface with radar. This enables the vessel to be more aware of other
vessels in the area, with reference to the GPS map that allows the
navigator to place them on a map and take appropriate action.
Then there are the little details that can be added to marine navigation
systems such as weather prediction via simple barometers, and electronic
compasses, so that the skipper can communicate bearing and other
information to vessels that might not have a GPS system on board.
