Mapping programs combined with GPS for
better direction
The idea behind mapping programs is to be able to render an area of real
world land in a way that is compatible with a GPS device or other
navigation system so that it can be uploaded into it and interacted
with. When used in conjunction with modern GPS navigation systems,
mapping programs offer an excellent way to get a little more direction
when going out and about in the great outdoors, navigating through the
urban jungle, or out on the ocean waves.
In fact, the best way to build up an extensive selection of digital maps
for your own personal use is by using mapping programs to scan an image
of a paper map that you might have into the computer and then convert it
to the right format. In this way you need not actually purchase official
maps, but can make do with what you have already.
Of course, the benefit of buying maps that are compatible with your GPS
navigation system as well as one of the many mapping programs that exist
on the market is to enable you to plan your route before heading out.
There are also many programs such as topographical software which can
put height and terrain information into your GPS so that you do not have
any nasty surprises when you get out into the field.
There are many consumer oriented mapping programs available for
purchase, both with and without maps, and they all provide an excellent
addition to any GPS based navigation system. Some can even be used on
their own to augment the use of simple paper maps.
