IPaq GPS
Using the advanced IPaq GPS systems
Handheld GPS is a reasonably new concept – the ability to carry a GPS
system around with you for the purposes of navigation was something that
only appeared in the movies, or was too expensive for the consumer
market. To a certain extent this has changed, but until the advent of
systems such as the IPaq GPS, the price was still quite high. The reason
that such innovations have produced a keener pricing policy is that by
using a IPaq GPS system, the manufacturer needs only to supply an
antenna and software, the difficult tasks such as sound, display, and
processing are handled by the PDA.
Since the advent of wireless communications such as Bluetooth, the IPaq
GPS philosophy can be extended even further to providing a vehicular GPS
which does not draw power from the main unit, communicates by Bluetooth
and can therefore be placed in a position which will facilitate
reception of the satellite signals.
The usual method of creating a handheld GPS system is to place the PDA
in a kind of cradle which provides the antenna. In the IPaq GPS system
this fits snugly around the PDA, and draws a limited amount of power
from it. Thanks to the PC connectivity and high performance processor
that the IPaq contains, the software that comes with the system is
really quite advanced.
It can handle everything from basic navigation through to route planning
and finding. And because the system is also a full PDA computer, the
IPaq GPS can even be extended by third party software solutions which
will make it even more useful and feature rich.
