The power of the GPS PDA system
A GPS system requires that signals from satellites are acquired and
processed in real time. In essence this means that there is some
processing to be done which should be handled by a computer. The GPS PDA
is a system which couples the innovation of the GPS navigation system
with the power of a real portable computer that is small enough to fit
in the palm of your hand. In addition, by using e GPS PDA system, the
manufacturer can reduce the cost f producing the GPS solution, because
they do not need to build a display or interface capabilities into the
hardware.
With the addition of Bluetooth wireless communication facilities to
today’s PDA system, the GPS PDA approach can even extend to vehicular
navigation. In the past this was not really feasible because the antenna
had to be placed in a cradle into which the PDA was docked. This creates
an unwieldy solution, and also the reception will suffer on account of
the antenna being inside the car.
Bluetooth allows the manufacturers of modern GPS PDA systems to locate
the antenna outside, where the reception is much better, and this will
lead to far better navigation. Since the PDAs can also produce sound,
the effect is augmented by the fact that the driver can also receive
voice prompts, meaning that they never have to take their eyes of the
road.
Even if you do not already own a PDA, this unique and innovative concept
could be the very reason that you decide to buy one. After all, there
are many GPS PDA packages available on the market which bundle the two
together at a very attractive price.
