GPS for cars: Looking at the different
options
If you have two cars, or want to fit a navigation system to an existing
car, then the classic options of GPS for cars fall into four categories
– radio, handheld, removable units and laptops. Of course not all of
these will be applicable to your situation, and part of the problem in
choosing from all the GPS for cars systems that there are on the market
is that there is quiet a lot of difference between them, but a lot of
choice too.
The first thing to consider is whether the system of GPS for cars that
you choose needs to be moveable – that is, will it remain in the car in
which you plan to install it initially or do you want to share it with
another vehicle. If the answer is that it will remain in the first car,
then a radio solution is probably going to be sufficient. In which case,
many radios with GPS capabilities can be found and fitted to almost
every car.
The next set of solutions for GPS for cars are the removable dedicated
GPS navigation systems. These have built in antennas and can be moved
between vehicles which is handy if you want to lend it to someone who is
taking a trip. Coupled with this solution is the PDA and GPS system, in
which the PDA is put into a special cradle which houses the GPS antenna.
The processing power of the PDA is then used to calculate the units
position.
Finally, there is the full GPS and laptop solution which can be use to
provide GPS for cars. In this case the laptop either connects to an
antenna that supports Bluetooth, or plugs into a GPS receiver via the
PCMCIA port. Again it is the power of the laptop that is used in
generating the map and processing GPS information.
