Golf GPS: a great innovation
One of the most innovative uses of the satellite navigation technology
is the golf GPS system. This offers a software and hardware solution
that uses GPS navigation to locate the unit on a golf course, and then
proceeds to calculate all manner of information which can be used by the
golfer to give an advantage when playing the course. Of course, it would
be unsporting to use the golf GPS system when playing in a match, but as
a way to get a better handle on the course, it is a real gift.
The solution that the golf GPS system requires is a map of the course,
which has been specially prepared to use waypoints which can be
navigated to. In fact, the maps themselves can be created either by the
user, or downloaded, for a fee, from the manufacturer of the system
itself.
There are even golf GPS systems that use a regular PDA in conjunction
with a simple GPS antenna which means that those golfers who are already
using a PDA to keep track of their score, can now augment that with a
top down view of the course. They can even use it to range find
distances from the unit to the pin, to an accuracy of 3 meters, where
the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) service is available.
Maps are available for use with many different golf GPS systems and for
many of the better known courses. Naturally, if you want to use the
system on your local course, and it is not listed, then you can scan in
a good scale map of the area, with the holes accurately plotted and the
software will do the rest in converting the map into a view of the
course.
