Features to look for in a fishfinder
The purpose of a fishfinder is to look for schools of fish, or large
individual specimens by using sonar and advanced tracking of sonar
information in a predictive manner. In fact, the advances in technology
over the years has meant that these are becoming more and more
sophisticated, and it is even possible to use your fishfinder in
conjunction with a GPS unit to facilitate group fishing or just so that
you know where to come back in the future.
At the high end of the market it is best to get a fishfinder unit with a
color display as this makes it much easier to see what the prediction
for the sea bed beneath the boat and the wildlife that are present is.
Most of the time these will come with other advanced features such as a
speed sensor and some method of controlling the gain of the sonar signal
such that it does not become confused by depth changes.
When looking for a more basic model, there are some basic fishfinder
features which are essential. For example, if you are planning to use
the device in an open vessel, and this is likely if you are looking for
an entry level device, then you need to make sure that one is purchased
that has adequate water proofing and shock absorption. This should
extend to the capability of the screen to stand up to a slight knock.
There are different varieties of machines for both offshore (salt water)
and freshwater anglers, and it is important that the fishfinder that you
buy is capable of dealing with the water and situation that you will be
using it in.
