Investigating car navigation systems
The basic form of car navigation is to have a paper map, and try to find
your location on it by looking out of the window for landmarks to give
you clues as to your whereabouts. The next stage in the old style car
navigation system is to look at the map and figure out where you need to
go next, and then try and use this information as you drive towards your
destination.
This is not a very safe or effective method of car navigation and is one
of the reasons that GPS based navigation systems have become so popular.
They offer features which allow the system to automatically generate a
route and establish whether the car is still on the right road or not.
This takes the onus away from the driver making for a safer journey.
More complex car navigation systems also augment this with the
possibility to hear the system speak the directions, so that the driver
need not even look at the display. A color display will ensure that the
driver is able to accurately determine the nature of the read out if
they become lost, or want additional information.
The most recent models also provide for advanced possibilities such as
planning complex car navigation routes involving the most efficient way
to perform deliveries to multiple addresses. These are clearly aimed
more at commercial users than recreational or casual ones.
The final category are those systems which perform car navigation based
on a received signal from a GPS antenna, and use the processing power of
a standard PDA to calculate and monitor the route. These offer an
excellent way to add GPS navigation to your car without heavy
investment.
