A guide to choosing a car navigation system
When choosing a car navigation system it is helpful to bear in mind that
it can have a dual use. That is to say, most portable GPS systems can
also come with features which are useful when navigating the urban
sprawl as well as the great outdoors. However, it is also a good idea to
check the explicit feature list of the system that you want to use as a
car navigation system, because it is not the case that all portable
units have street level maps in them.
In fact, in order to get a decent quality street level map to use with
your car navigation system, you will need to either go with a PDA and
GPS solution or a dedicated in car GPS system. The reason for this is
that in order to have effective street navigation, the system has to
have available a large database of roads. In the case of Europe, a
single CD will not cover the area required, and thus the area is split
up into roughly one CD per country.
In the case of the UK, there is more than 1 CD to cover it, and so you
can see that the car navigation system has to be able to treat a lot of
information, which needs to be stored somewhere, usually on CD. On the
other hand, a PDA can also have quite a lot of built-in memory, and also
has the additional advantage that it can load other data as needed from
an external source.
