Bluetooth GPS
The wireless Bluetooth GPS innovation
In the old days of PDA based GPS solutions, you needed to connect your
PDA either to a GPS antenna via a wire, or sit it in a kind of cradle
that facilitated communication between the two devices. These days,
advances in wireless technology have brought us the advent of Bluetooth
GPS systems. No more need for wires, which is great because it means
that the antenna can be located where it serves the best purpose – on
the roof of the car. Not to mention that if your cell phone also
supports the technology, you can also have Bluetooth GPS on that device
too.
The advantage is that now the manufacturer can keep costs low, and pass
on the savings to the consumer, by only having to produce one kind of
interface. The Bluetooth GPS system will be able to talk with many
different devices, PDAs, handheld computers, phones and so on, using
exactly the same protocol – no messing with wires or cradles.
It is also great news for software manufacturers too, since they can
take advantage of Bluetooth GPS systems to provide software solutions
that use competitors devices. Not to mention the fact that it hail the
advent of possible public service GPS.
In the same way that some places now offer public service internet and
messaging, we could be seeing he launch of Bluetooth GPS public service
in the near future. This would alleviate the need for the PDA owner to
buy an antenna, they could just acquire the software, and get
navigating.
