The power of aviation GPS
The GPS technology has taken the world by storm – there is no doubt that
it is one of the most important advances in navigation technologies
ever, and it really comes into its own when used in the aviation
industry. In fact, every aspect of flying can be helped by the addition
of an aviation GPS to an aircrafts systems. What is more, as in other
vehicles, the aviation GPS unit can be added after the fact, it is not
necessary to have purchased it already fitted.
Many advances have been made in the area of aviation GPS systems, and
the more modern units have the possibility to interface with the
autopilot ,and come loaded with removable memory cards which provide
mapping information for very large areas. This is necessary because an
aircraft will cover larger distances than other vehicles, and
consequently need a bigger map.
One downside is that the maps will tend to be less detailed than their
non aviation GPS equivalents. Part of the problem is that, in order to
cover a wide enough area, the memory that is required should be supplied
on some form of removable storage or a hard drive, which are susceptible
to vehicle shudder.
Certain models of aviation GPS units can also be used in planning the
best approach to an airport, and using FAA overlays can even be used in
the approach itself. Not to mention the fact that they can also tell you
the way to the nearest airport in the event of an emergency.
