Trimble affordable and innovative GPS
technology
If ever the word convergence held any meaning, it is when used in
conjunction with Trimble GPS systems. Not content with providing
affordable GPS technology to the open market, Trimble went on to offer
complete customer solutions by integrating their GPS units with other
technologies such as wireless telecommunications and advanced software.
The word that Trimble uses is : augmentation. Taking existing
technologies and augmenting them with other ones, some new, some tried
and tested, is very much the key way in which the company seeks to
position its GPS products.
Applications that Trimble have found for GPS systems include surveying,
navigation, and advanced technologies such as asset tracking and machine
guidance. In fact, in almost every area of industry, there is a possible
application for these augmented GPS systems.
Way back in 1978, there was no such thing as consumer GPS, and the
company focused on developing navigation products using ground based
technologies, but it soon became clear that the GPS system would be the
future of navigation systems. The founders duly acquired some fledgling
GPS technology and created Trimble to concentrate on positioning
systems.
Trimble was the first to develop an architecture which augmented the
processor of the target device with GPS technology, in essence using the
power of the CPU to perform tasks which would normally be done by
specialist electronics. This is the key to making GPS affordable, since
people already owning a PDA (for example) can take advantage of the
system buy purchasing only an antenna and some specialist software
