The practical uses of GPS tracking devices
So long as a device is capable of knowing where it is, then it can
transmit that information to a third party, and this is the underlying
principle of the latest in GPS tracking devices. In fact, they have many
different uses, including civilian and military which makes GPS tracking
devices one of the most innovative products yet.
In fact, some of the more benign uses for tracking devices are amongst
the most interesting. For example, companies are producing vehicle fleet
service products that pass telemetry information from the vehicle back
to a nominal base already, so why not extend this application by also
passing back GPS information.
This will enable the central site monitoring the tracking devices to
know how far, fast and where the car has been, as well as over what
terrain, and specific height information regarding any hills. All of
this can give the fleet owner a much better idea of exactly what kind of
terrain and use the cars are getting – all in order to make sure that
the services are done on time, and that potential problems can be
spotted before they occur.
Of course it is also inevitable the tracking devices are used to keep an
eye on people, whether it be recently released persistent offenders, or
even your own children, for the sake of security.
It is also obvious that tracking devices will draw a certain amount of
criticism and hostility as people decide that they are just another step
on the path to removing civil liberties. What they do not realize is
that there are very good reasons for using such a technology, as long as
its use is not abused.
