The GPS person locator
In the movies, the spy always seems to find a neat piece of electronics
that they can pin on someone so that they know where they are at all
times. This kind of person locator has remained in the movie industry
until now, simply because the technology required to assemble GPS
Information into a manner which can be processed properly was to large
to be inconspicuous. However, since we can now fit the hardware into a
digital watch, the idea of the GPS person locator has taken hold in the
consumer industry.
In fact, it is a two part solution. The actual person locator itself is
simply an addition to a standard digital watch which receives GPS
signals from satellites and triangulates them into a final co-ordinate.
By itself, this co-ordinate is not very useful, and the person wearing
the watch can do little with it.
However, using cell phone and radio technology, the person locator will
then transmit its location back to a central site. It is this central
site that takes on the responsibility of actually placing the location
of the GPS Unit on a map.
Then the parent, law enforcement official, or spy, can then contact the
central site to find out where the person locator is. This trick can be
done for cars and other vehicles, as well as people. It is part of a
system to help parents know that their kids are safe, and for parole
officers to track recent releases of offenders back into society.
