Using GPS as a people locator
One of the most innovative uses for the GPS system is as a people
locator. In fact, rescue services would probably prefer that more people
used GPS systems for exactly this purpose. There are also several GPS
based people locator products on the general market.
Technology has now advanced to the point where a GPS device can be
fitted in another communications device such as a mobile telephone. This
means that the people locator hardware can be placed inside something
that already transmits a signal.
This technology has already been applied in some countries with a high
incident of car theft in an attempt to curb it. Each vehicle is fitted
with a GPS system and a radio which can transmit the location of the
machine to a central base. It is a small step from this solution to a
genuine people locator which can be given to someone with, or without
their knowledge.
So, a genuine people locator solution may even be controversial. On the
other hand, parents might like to know where there children are at
night, and it is a certainty that police and other law enforcement
officials would welcome a system that enabled them to track offenders
more easily. This would especially apply to prevention of re-offending
in cases where the individual had been released back into the community.
Today’s people locator services use a transmitting device, containing a
GPS system, which is then converted to a map co-ordinate by a central
site. People can then call this site to know where the holder of the
device is.
