Mapopolis
One of the most recent innovations in the world of cartography has to be
the initiative of Mapopolis to bring digital maps to handheld devices
and smart phones at a reasonable price. The software includes maps that
can generate door to door driving details, complete with voice commands
and rerouting if you manage to take a wrong turn, all based on the
Mapopolis platform.
There are versions of the Mapopolis software available for most handheld
PDAs and palmtop computers, as well as the latest smart phones, and they
all take full advantage of the processing power offered by the host
system. In this they have taken the same approach as other manufacturers
of GPS mapping software.
Where the Mapopolis approach is slightly different is that they have
introduced solutions which do not require a GPS unit at all. This means
that you get the same great features as you do on the GPS version, but
without those that require a GPS location fix to work – such as
automatic rerouting and dynamic door to door routing.
Of course, the GPS version of the Mapopolis systems offer the best deal,
since they are able to perform everything automatically, which makes
them great for driving. However, it may not be feasible (on a phone, for
example) to plug into a GPS antenna, and so the non-GPS version provides
a great alternative.
It is also possible to download maps for your device from the Mapolpolis
web site, for use with their software, so you will never be in a
situation where you cannot locate yourself using your PDA or smart
phone.
