The magic GPS locator
Technology moves in such large bounds that it is almost impossible to
predict what will be developed next. The GPS locator is one of those
products that would have been impossible to predict even a few short
years ago. These days, however, we can shoehorn so much technology into
such a small package that we can combine the power of GPS, telephone and
pager into a watch that provides full GPS locator functions as well as
other stunning features.
For a child to want to use a GPS locator, it has to be practical beyond
its original goal which is to inform parents about the location of their
kids. This means that it needs to provide another function, such as
pager, phone or watch. Or even a combination of all of these.
In fact the very latest in the GPS locator field does exactly that. It
is an atomic watch, which can receive pager messages, send a message to
call 911, has a GPS receiver and transmits location information back to
a central system so that parents can find out where their children are,
whenever they need to.
This would all be to no avail were it not for another piece of
technology which is more mechanical than electronic. The locator watches
also need to be locked in place to prevent unauthorized removal. This is
not so much to prevent the child from removing it, as to prevent anyone
else forcing the child to do so.
Since the locator can not be removed, it also has to be rugged and
waterproof, and one thing to look out for is that the unit has been
tested by children. This will prove that it is rugged enough to stand up
to the test of time.
