The exciting sport of geocaching
For those of you who think that geocaching is just a fun game for GPS
enthusiasts, think again! While it is true that having a GPS system will
probably make it more accessible as a pastime, since navigation will be
rendered easily within the grasp of any GPS owner, that is not the
point. geocaching is all about being able to get to a given location and
recovering the treasure hidden there.
It started in Finland, in 1999, where geocaching required using a map to
be able to navigate to the location. These days, with the advent of he
GPS system and the world wide web, it is clear that as a game, this kind
of pastime was going to grow.
Of course, like all things that rely on a certain amount of luck,
interaction and skill, geocaching is not for everyone. GPS units,
however, that can be loaded with information about specific caches and
lead you to them without giving precise mapping information on the
display (just a direction) make the whole sport both accessible and
entertaining.
Part of the fun is that caches tend to be in places where the GPS signal
goes weak. The idea being that it shouldn’t be too easy to find. On the
other hand, there are plenty of different levels of geocaching
difficulty, so getting started shouldn’t be a problem.
What is important, is that you choose a GPS system that is capable of
being used for geocaching – just one that has the ability to point you
in the right direction, and perhaps store multiple cache locations will
be enough to get you started.
